It had been a few weeks since I had hatched the plan to play a recital at the adult daycare center that my dad visits, but between their activity schedule and mine, the first available date was a couple of days after I met Marcus. He hadn’t called me yet, and Chloe wasn’t around to talk me down.

I had roped Gwen into joining me for the recital. We decided to help our audience celebrate the recent holiday with harp and piano duets featuring selections from the Great American Songbook, ending with a George M. Cohan sing-along.

The ride to Cranford gave me a chance to gush about Marcus to Gwen. She was thrilled I had moved on from Josh and had exhibited better skills in luring Marcus into thinking about asking me out. She reassured me it was too early to panic about not hearing from him, but she warned me not to obsess over my too-silent phone. Only when I told her about the knees-gone-weak sensation I experienced did she grow concerned.

“Honey, what happens when your knees stop feeling weak? The knees will recover, but you’ll still be stuck feeling weak.”

“The sensation I felt — it’s not weakness. It must be chemistry. Pheromones or something.”

“Attraction is powerful. But don’t forget: sometimes chemical reactions go boom. I don’t want to see you get hurt.” She glanced at me, reading the pout on my face. “Aw, Ellen. Don’t be sad. I’m not saying you shouldn’t screw like little bunnies. Go get all cowgirl on this stud. But please protect your heart. As well as your private parts. Don’t be bringing home any diseases. Or little Marcuses. Marcii?”

“No need to pluralize. If I get the chance to get naked with him, I promise we’ll be safe. But I think Marcus is different. It’s more than just the chemistry between us. He had such a genuine interest in me. I have to stop obsessing over him, though. He hasn’t called yet. But thanks for listening to me. I haven’t had a chance to talk to Chloe about him. This may be the longest I’ve ever gone without dumping my love life into her lap to sort out for me.”

“Talk about records. I can’t believe she’s still dating the same man after a month! She’s been keeping this Elliott guy to herself. I haven’t seen him since the night they met.”

“Tell me about it! And when she and I finally spend some time with each other, all she does is talk about him. It feels like we don’t have anything else bonding us together. Whenever I begin a conversation about anything besides Elliott, she makes it seem like I’m starting a fight with her. It’s bad enough my mom is still in a huff over my failed date with her friend’s son, but not getting along with Chloe is making me feel untethered.”

“I’m sorry to hear things are tense with you and Chloe, sweets. Are you sure it’s a problem between the two of you? Maybe something else is bothering her, and you keep catching her at the wrong moment.
